Description

Novelist and biographer, film maker and journalist Nicholas Shakespeare was described by the Wall Street Journal as ‘one of the best English novelists of our time.’

He grew up in the Far East and South America – his time in the latter represented in two award-winning novels The Vision of Elena Silves and The Dancer Upstairs. He was initially a journalist for BBC Television and then assistant arts and literary editor at The Times. He was previously literary editor of both The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Telegraph.

In 1999 he published an acclaimed biography of Bruce Chatwin and he has also created extended biographies for television on such diverse figures as Evelyn Waugh and Dirk Bogarde. His novel Snowleg (2004) was long listed for the Booker Prize.

Shakespeare has worked with charities such as Oxfam, for which he has written several times, and the Anita Goulden Trust, of which he has been the patron since 2000.
