Amanda Craig was born in South Africa, but left as a baby, following the Sharpeville massacre. She grew up in Italy, where her parents worked for the UN, and became an award-winning journalist and the author of eight novels, twice long-listed for the Women's Prize for fiction with Hearts and Minds and The Golden Rule. Praised by Bernadine Evaristo as a State of the Nation novelist and "such a skillful story-teller who vividly dramatises our lives with wit, wisdom and compassion", she has just finished her ninth novel, The Three Graces, involving illegal migration into Italy, for publication next June.
